You know your Mom better than anyone else in the world.  When thinking of a gift for Mothers Day keep these basic rules in mind

  1. Be practical – Is it something she would want?
  2. Pamper Her – Give mom a day off
  3. Give the gift of time – Take some time off from your day and spend it with her.
  4. Cook it – Mom has made your meals for years, now it’s your turn.
  5. Give a gift that last – Give real thought to what you give.

  2. Mother’s Day is not always a good day for all people. Some of us did not have loving mothers. My own mother wrote the words “Burn in Hell” across her Bible before setting herself on fire. I would have cursed her with the same words for the tortur I endured at her hand until something happened when I turned 33 years old. I had an opportunity to see a copy of her medical records from a mental hospital where I learned that she was involuntarily committed 18 times in the first 18 years of my life. I never, ever knew my mother had an illness. I honestly thought that my four siblings and I were just horrific children that forced her to go away. After all she had five children before she turned 20 years old and my father left after the last child was born. I am writing to say that, at 50 years old, while writing my memoir, My Mother Killed Christ: But God Loved Me Anyway, I finally began to see my mother as a woman who suffered a tragic life and death due to a severe illness. Even though I endured severe physical abuse at her hands, I can finally forgive her because I realize that she was only doing the best she could with what she was given. I pray that she is finally safe and surrounded by God’s love. I began this post with the statement that not everyone had a loving mother. I hope that those of us who didn’t could give ourselves the best gift on Mother’s Day: Forgive the mother who may have hurt you. In doing so, you will find forgiveness for your own trespasses as well.
